The 106th Indianapolis 500 is in the books. Marcus Ericsson won the race but the 2023 Corvette Z06, a 70th anniversary edition, arguably stole the show as the race’s well-done pace car. And as a manner of pre-race festivities, some folks got to ride shotgun in the Z06 around the Brickyard, reaching speeds well above anything we’ve seen before on video.

Byron Glover Jr also known as Drive 615 on YouTube got the privilege of a ride along prior to race day. It was evident this was his first time riding along in the new C8 Corvette Z06, as his excitement was inescapable. Who wouldn’t be excited to sit in the cockpit of the 2023 Z06 though. The Z06 sports a 5.5 liter flat-plane crank V8 pushing out 670 naturally aspirated horsepower at 8,400 RPM with a redline of 8,600 RPM. As a comparison, the Indy cars it paced during the Indy 500 are capable of about 700 horsepower and redline at 12,000 RPM courtesy of their twin-turbo V6 engines. Glover Jr’s ride-along reached a peak speed of 163 MPH, relatively close to its 188 MPH velocity maximum.

Not only was this the next generation of Z06 to come down the line, but the pace car was equipped with the Z07 package. That package consists of a massive rear wing, dive planes, as well as better tires and brakes. This year’s pace car was dressed in a White Pearl Metallic Tri-Coat with special anniversary center caps on the wheels which were painted red to match the brake calipers. If you’re looking for no-commentary ride along footage, Chevrolet Performance posted a video of exactly that on their Twitter page. The next Indy car race is Chevrolet’s Detroit Grand Prix taking place Sunday June 5th at 3pm.
