Toyota in the Phillipines has live-streamed the launch of its sportiest HiLux variant yet, following similar unveilings in Asian markets, but despite the new brake calipers and shocks, this isn't the Ford Ranger Raptor fighter you've been waiting for.
That's not to say it's not coming, and rumours of an incoming Toyota GR HiLux fitted with the thumping V6 diesel from the LandCruiser 300 Series abound, but this warmed-over GR S variant is clearly designed as a stepping stone rather than a full off-road assault.
Toyota is promoting the new model as producing "better handling" and "unmatched stability" courtesy of new mono-tube shock absorbers, GR-branded brake calipers and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the automatic gearbox.
“Under the development of Toyota Gazoo Racing, we are bringing motorsport excitement to your daily drive with a sportier, heart-racing reinvention that pushes the limits of the models we know and love,” said Toyota Phillipines boss Atsuhiro Okamoto.
Under the bonnet, you'll find no change to Toyota's 2.8-litre diesel donk, recently upgraded to produce 150kW and 500Nm, paired with a six-speed auto.
What you will find, however, is a new-look front end, headlined by a new mesh grilled with the TOYOTA lettering, body-coloured overfenders, 18-inch alloys and a new black sports bar.
Inside, expect a sportier interior treatment, with the prerequisite red stitching and GR emblems throughout.
As far as Australia goes, Toyota here is yet to rule out the introduction of a GR S model (but has also pointed out it has no announcements to make), and has pointed to the general love of HiLux down-under.
