« The world’s first electric luxury sports car », is how Maserati likes to describe the GranTurismo Folgore, which has already been the subject of a long teasing campaign. Our spies caught a prototype on and around the Nürburgring circuit wearing camouflage that doesn’t hide much. It’s more of a livery since we can observe most of the details, including a seemingly real front grille.
The overall appearance should be the spitting image of the gasoline-powered GranTurismo which should be unveiled before the end of the year. The Folgore (fully electric version) will be released in 2023 with three motors delivering a combined power of « much more » than 1200 horsepower. She will go from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds and will reach a top speed of over 300 km/h.
The prototype has stock wheels, with red brake calipers hiding behind. Maserati has said the GranTurismo Folgore will be « the lowest all-electric car on the luxury market » by installing the battery pack very low for optimal weight distribution and to lower the center of gravity.
The test vehicle was equipped with bucket seats with a roll bar behind, which obviously will not be the case for the production model. A closer look at the prototype reveals that the charging hatch is mounted under the taillight on the driver’s side.
Truth be told, the new GranTurismo doesn’t look all that different from the previous model that was retired at the end of 2019. Some would say that’s a bit disappointing since the GT was launched in 2007. However, it’s best to wait for the production model and see if this design works on the high-performance coupe.
We’re just happy that parent company Stellantis is giving Maserati the attention it deserves by finally releasing new products. The MC20 supercar was the first, but it’s the Grecale crossover that may or may not lift the struggling Italian brand. The next-generation Quattroporte and Levante will both arrive in 2025 with an electric drivetrain.
