Toyota GR Corolla Set to Debut Thursday, March 31

Mark your calendars for three days from now, folks.

Not only is it payday for a lot of us working schlubs, but Carscoops reports it’s also the day we’ll see the Toyota GR Corolla — and that the car is slated for our shores.

Apparently, Toyota hasn’t even confirmed this officially, but like with a magic 8-ball (or David Puddy, for you Seinfeld geeks), all signs point to yes.

The car’s makeover will include different front fenders, GR badging, gloss-black fender vents, lighter wheels, performance brakes with red calipers, and a side skirt.

Mechanicals are unclear, but the GR Yaris has all-wheel drive with three different drive modes that change the split of how power is sent to the wheels. In Normal, the split is 60/40, in Sport it’s 70/30 rearward bias, and in Track it’s 50/50.

The GR Yaris’ 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder — 257 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque — is also expected to be underhood in the GR Corolla. It’s possible Toyota could dial-up more power for the Corolla.

That’s about all we can say for now, because it’s about all we know for now. Toyota did put out a teaser video, which is below.

A 257-hp 3-banger? That’s going to be…interesting.

I remember when people were snubbing V6 engines, because V8s were better/more reliable.

Me, I trust Toyota to have this engine well squared away. That’s what they do.

@jalop That’s what Toyota does because they keep the tech old (and still have issues). Getting that kind of HP from a 1.5L, Toyota is going to have the same issues everyone else does. They’re not magic.

Even with legendary Toyota reliability I’d still be worried getting that much power from that little displacement.

160 hp/L is respectable for forced induction, but not exactly zomfg territory.

In the Corolla class that’s kissing zomfg territory IMO.

It’s just pressure. Half-a$s a design originally conceived for lower pressure, and you’ll have problems. Design from the start around the boost pressure you expect, and it’ll be fine. Though I don’t know how this particular engine has been doing in real life in the foreign markets where it’s been on sale for a while.

Engine in use for a few years in GR Yaris. No major issues.

That’s a lot of bang for cylinder count. I don’t believe it unless it is a Toyota.

What’s cylinder count got to do with it?

Answer. Nothing. If you think so, you don’t know how engines work.

As for power per litre, it’s about the same as the Golf R engine, and the EA888 has been around for a decade, bedevilled here and there by the famous variable quality of VW. Compared to the Mercedes AMG four banger at 400 hp from 2.0l, these things are pikers. Hell, the new Civic R will be 160 hp/l as well.

Compared to the Yaris, though, the Corolla is a big floppy beast of little intrinsic merit. And the GR Yaris AWD system is prone to failure — there’s your Achilles heel:

Normally aspirated, it’s 300hp

Koenigsegg got pneumatic actuators, and my truck got the shaft.

what kind of gas mileage?

Great to see Toyota have a solid lineup of attainable performance cars.

Though I don’t envy anyone whos going to try to get one of these this year. Toyota’s inability to order cars for customers was what pushed me into a BRZ instead of a GR86. Giving a dealer my color and trim preference and then hoping they get one is not the best way to land a hot new car. Loads of people are still just waiting in the dark for their 86 to show up.

I’m in coastal SoCal so I expect huge ADM on these for the first model year and part of the second. Then it will fall of like the Ford RS I’d think. $10K+ would not surprise me in the least.

Toyota should call it the Corolla GRrrrr!

I’d drive the snot out of this. My Fiesta ST but more frantic an D with more horsepower! Yes please!
